Today’s demanding lifestyle is making people pray for an extra hour on the clock. They surrendered on their health by trying to do multiple things at the same time. One of the prime things they left for a toss is water drinking habit.

When you take water while standing; the rapid flow directly hits the base of the esophagus, dilating the sphincter that connects esophagus and stomach. Dilation of sphincter leads to heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. Frequent acid reflux will cause GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), which is potentially dangerous.
Kidneys handle water filtration at its best when water is consumed in the sitting position. Standing and forcing more amount of water will strain the kidneys, and the intolerance allows some microparticles escape the filtration. These particles will eventually deposit on the urinary tract, and bladder walls, leading to infections and inflammation.

Knee and Joint Pain
Just like machinery, our body joints also need proper lubrication. Sufficient lubrication will save your joints from stiffness, pain and excess wear. The habit of drinking water while standing creates an imbalance in body fluids. The knee is the most stressed joint as it tolerates the whole body weight. More stress on the joints without proper lubrication will cause arthritis (a medical condition with chronic stiff and painful joints).
Observe the difference yourself by doing these two things: Drink water whiles you standing for a day, and try having water in small sips when you are sitting. You can notice that you need more water to satiate your thirst, and also there’s an increase in the frequency of drinking water.
Why Should You Sit When You Drink Water?
Suggested by Ayurveda
Ayurveda says; drinking water while standing is speeding up water inside the digestive tract, causing refluxes and reducing digesting power considerably. Apart from digestive issues, standing and drinking water tend to create tension on the nerves. This reaction sends alert messages to the fighting system and the sympathetic system gets activated. To avoid this unwanted reaction and potential nerve damage, one should sit and sip water in a relaxed fashion.
Prevent Digestive System From Damage
It is permissible to have water while standing once in a while. But if it becomes chronic, you are putting your digestive system danger. The thing is, you may flush down the good bacteria present in the digestive tract by splashing water suddenly. These bacteria are substantially helpful in speeding up the digestive process.
So, What’s the Point?
The human body is constituted with 60 percent of water. It is highly essential to keep yourself hydrated. But to maintain sound health, you should seriously consider sitting and drinking water. Also, instead of gulping a huge amount of water at once, listen to your body carefully and replenish yourself with water whenever needed. You can find if your body needs water by observing some signals like thirst, dry lips, dark urine, etc. Whenever you feel like drinking water, sit and have a sip. Satisfaction is a feeling that body tells you have consumed enough water, and you should stop at this point.
Remember, it will take just an extra minute to sit and sip water. We know time is money, but it’s not worth to put your health at risk!
